Research

The Department of Orthodontics has two research programs-one basic science program and one clinical research program. Both have post-doctoral and dental student involvement.

The clinical research program focuses on biobehavioral and functional outcomes of orthodontic and orthognathic surgery studies of oral motor adaptation with changes in the occlusion and age are a primary focus. The program involves collaboration with the Departments of Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental Diagnostic Science, Physiology and with the V. A. Hospital. In 2003, a practice-based research program has been developed to study clinical orthodontic issues. In 2006 this became a nationwide program.

The basic science research programs focus on studies on genetic regulation of bone cells, including changes during orthodontic treatment and the development of new models studying regulation of bone modeling. The program involves collaborations with researchers from the University of Connecticut and the Departments of Medicine, Cellular and Structural Biology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, and Dental Diagnostic Sciences and Endodontics.
